Domenica Mastromatteo is a first-generation Italian Canadian artist born in Montreal, Quebec. She is a graduate of the Vancouver Art Therapy Institute and runs a private practice in North Vancouver, British Columbia. Domenica is an interdisciplinary artist, art therapist and registered clinical counsellor who engages care-based methodologies to curate art-based experiences that create safe spaces for people to express, regulate, and make meaning of their inner lives. Specializing in relational, community-based art making, Domenica draws from art therapy and community practice to design inclusive creative experiences that invite participation across skill levels and reduce pressure around artistic “achievement.” Her work explores how art can function as a holding space to support emotional regulation, expression, and collective healing. Through facilitation, gathering, and shared creative inquiry, Domenica reimagines art-making as a living, relational practice rooted in presence, care, and community.
Experience
Works with a wide range of clients (children, adolescents and adults) with a range of issues: PTSD, trauma, bereavement, ADHD, depression, anxiety, and addictions. Combines her understanding of the therapeutic process, with the fine arts (as professional artist), educator and advocate (empowering children and families) to her professional practice.
Her work with sensationalchildren.ca afforded her over 15 years experience problem solving with families to uncover the beliefs behind misbehaviours and build a life they can be proud of.
Continued Learner
Working toward a coherent, interdisciplinary approach to professional practice by continuously evaluating new ideas and theories of human personality, problem development, change processes and growth. Practicing within a de-colonial framework as a feminist with a multi-cultural perspective, she is continually learning to unpack the dysfunctional and harmful reinforcement of gender roles and inequalities in the political, economic, and social arenas.
Domenica believes in using art for self-discovery, sewing together the tapestry of life to move towards self-actualization.
